IE-CHY-6998-PRJ1498 Christian Aid Ireland The goal of REAP is to help increase household income, and access to finance and markets. The project will provide business skills training and micro-loans (repayable through VSLAs) allowing people to establish small businesses and strengthen existing businesses. REAP will work towards lifting 5250 households in the Mulanje and Phalombe District of Malawi out of extreme poverty by 2025. The goal is transforming the lives of thousands by taking concrete steps towards ending extreme poverty. The specific objectives are: Outcome 1: Increased financial inclusion and economic opportunities of 5250 poor households of which 70 % are women and 30% are men.  Activities 1.1.1 Targeting – through community led participatory approach. Identify new REAP participants through community consultation, ranking through REAP unique targeting tool. 1.1.2 Support for the formation of  350 VSLAs 1.1.3 Skills transfer through business skills training, VSLA and finacial literacy training. 1.1.4 Further training for VSLAs in group dynamics and provision of technical assistance on group functionality. 1.1.5 Disburse zero interest loans through VSLAs as start-up capital  1.1.6 VSLA interest free loan repayments and graduation. 1.1.7 Life-skills sessions include household decision-making, the importance of educating children, family planning, natural resource management, health and women’s rights.   Outcome 2: Increased and diversified livelihood practices by 5250 poor households of which 70%  are women and 30% are men. Activities 2.1.1 Promote and support selected 50 graduated groups in businesses of their choice both with quick turn around  fish farming, small livestock production, horticulture, bee keeping e.t.c 2.1.2 VSLAs produce group business plans and submit for funding. Some of the businesses that show greatest potential are selected for further loan funding for expansion. 2.1.3 Provision loans  for  both enterprises that require high investments or Expanded turnover as well as those with quick turnover businesses. Implementation has, however, been a challenge which is affecting the quality services delivered in the country. Instances are that: little has been achieved in the area of Audit Accountability. Lots of recommendations, the Auditor General’s Reports have preferred over the years, which the MDAs have not complied with. These include following laid-down processes and procedures in procurements, for which the rules are clear in terms of how the various procurements should be carried out. Some MDAs could not provide proper supporting documents to show proof of expenditure when the documents are required for auditing purposes. The Auditors have found over time, material misstatements and or overstatements, when thorough examinations are done on the available fiscal and administrative documents that are available for audit inspection. This mostly affects the quality of Audit Opinions; the Auditor General have made over the period. Cash losses and other service delivery issues, have been growing over time and this is becoming worrisome for how Audit Accountability can be enhanced, both at the Central and Local Council levels. We will take a holistic approach to addressing the root causes of inequalities at the community and country level, in line with triple nexus principles. In Burundi regressive cultural and religious norms and practices favour the dominance of men over women and perpetuate acceptance of high levels of physical and economic exploitation of women and other legally recognised social gtoups such as Batwa, returnees, disable people, and albinos. Rapid population growth linked to weak sexual and reproductive health knowledge and rights further contributes to unequal power dynamics and limits the ability of women and girls to participate fully in the public sphere. Some progress has been made with the introduction of policies (such as the National Gender Policy 2021-2025), but implementation is slow, budget is inadequate, and mechanisms for policy implementation, when they exist, are weak. The intervention was carried out in three districts; Bonbali, Port Loko, and Pujehun and it involved working with partners, landowners, and land-users’ groups, while interacting with stakeholders at the micro, meso, and macro-levels to bring about both attitudes and behavioral as well as policy change. The project ended with the milestones achieved at varying degrees and a major objective of the Provinces Land Act, Cap 122 repealed and replaced with two new land laws; the Customary Land Rights Act and the National Land Commission Act. This Intervention will target the same communities that were targeted by the previous project as a way to deepen all gains as well as to prepare them for the next journey of the implementation of the new laws. The intervention will establish at least five District Multistakeholder Platforms and will facilitate the establishment of the Town/Village Area Land committees in all our operational communities. Members of the structures established will be trained so that they are able to match up to their terms of reference as enshrined in the laws. Tackling these challenges in each of the four borderland regions (Burkina Faso and Mali, Dominican Republic and Haiti, Ethiopia and Kenya, Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory), requires a joined-up approach across the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding nexus, to address climate-related security risks. The Triple Nexus approach provides communities with a holistic, localised, coordinated and effective response, leveraging the complementarities of partners’ expertise, to reinforce the mutually reinforcing dividends of their interventions. Rapid population growth linked to weak sexual and reproductive health knowledge and rights further contributes to unequal power dynamics and limits the ability of women and girls to participate fully in the public sphere. Some progress has been made with the introduction of policies (such as the National Gender Policy 2021-2025), but implementation is slow, budget is inadequate, and mechanisms for policy implementation, when they exist, are weak. COPED contributes to strengthening community-based actors for improved ability to engage with the duty-bearers for their sexual and reproductive health rights while supporting ongoing efforts to strengthen peacebuilding policies and structures at the household and community. WLSA work incorporates action into research by questioning and challenging the law, instigating campaigns for changes in laws, policies and plans of action, educating women and girls about their rights, providing legal advice and gender sensitizing communities and leadership. The primary problem that we seek to address is the lack of constitutional awareness and literacy among women which has led to them having a poor sense of ownership of the law leading to lack of assertiveness. While the development of the constitution was progressive, the non-alignment of the laws and the piecemeal, selective implementation of the constitution has resulted to threats to the rule of law, undermining independent commissions, the violations of human rights and the non-entrenchment of constitutionalism. In the aforementioned areas, women are disproportionately affected by poor service delivery; inadequate access to health and education, increased gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices such as early marriages due to patriarchy. Furthermore, there is lack of sustainable use of natural resources, corruption and limited participation and representation of women in key decision-making processes which continue to disempower women. The limited enjoyment of constitutional provisions has led women to apathy due to an inability to engage with policy makers in demanding improved access to their rights. The project seeks to empower women to identify issues, self-organize and approach duty bearers to demand and defend their rights. PBI's accompaniment not only protects members of the organisations we accompany, but everyone in the communities and regions where we are indirectly present. This comprehensive accompaniment is fundamental for communities and organisations to be able to develop peacebuilding initiatives and projects in defence of human rights in a protected space. We also seek to make these initiatives and the situation of their promoters visible at a national and international level in order to achieve sustained support for them. Our integral protection model is based on 4 complementary work axes: 1) the physical accompaniment and international observation of accompanied people and processes to generate safe working spaces; 2) the work of interlocution with Colombian civil and military entities at the national and regional level to convey concerns about the situation of our accompanied and accompanied people; and interlocution with allied and support network actors in the United States, Europe and Colombia, to support requests for the protection of accompanied people and communities, and to generate international pressure with the aim of achieving full respect for human rights; 3) the production and dissemination of communication materials to make visible and inform about the risks faced by human rights defenders; and 4) the reconstruction of the social fabric through the promotion and facilitation of spaces for meeting and collective construction of organised civil society, based on a comprehensive protection approach that includes security (physical and digital) and psychosocial support. Focalizado en departamentos con alta afectación del conflicto armado y las violencias contra las mujeres, han sido definidos dos objetivos específicos: OE1. Brindado acompañamiento psicojurídico a mujeres víctimas de violencia sexual, y diferentes VBG, y desarrollado un trabajo articulado con instancias de la justicia transicional. OE2. Implementada una estrategia de litigio enfocada en la reparación individual y colectiva de mujeres víctimas e impulsada la incorporación del enfoque feminista en las acciones de justicia restaurativa de la institucionalidad responsable. Los efectos esperados sobre el grupo objetivo son: promovido el acceso a la justicia, brindado el acompañamiento psicojurídico, facilitado el acompañamiento psicosocial colectivo e individual, promovido su acceso a medidas de reparación individual y colectiva. Asimismo, el trabajo conjunto con la institucionalidad, es clave para propiciar que desde sus ámbitos de actuación, las instituciones responsables brinden una mayor o más cualificada respuesta frente a las necesidades, dificultades y expectativas de las mujeres víctimas de violencia sexual y VBG. Promoting the clarification of the historical and judicial truth about political violence.  Regarding the work in territorial defence and the fight against the climate crisis, the project seeks the activation of justice in national and international jurisdiction in the face of human, territorial and environmental rights violations against communities, the strengthening of knowledge and skills of organisational processes and communities for the enforceability of collective rights in the protection of territory, health, the environment and nature.  With regard to work on overcoming conflict and peacebuilding, the aim is to promote institutional reforms that promote a drug policy in accordance with UN guidelines and international standards; the normative implementation of point 1 (rural reform), point 3 (protection guarantees for communities), point 4 (crop substitution) and point 6 (drug policy) of the Peace Agreement, with a comprehensive approach.  Likewise, the promotion of the implementation of the normative and political framework on the comprehensive protection of human rights leaders and defenders and their work in defence of human rights and advocacy and communication actions to increase national and international social support for human rights leaders and defenders and the right to social protest. A este objetivo se vinculan 445 personas, 230 personas con las que ya se viene realizando un proceso con anterioridad en los municipios de Tona, Matanza, Rionegro, Charta y Suratá; y en esta nueva etapa se vinculan a 215 personas en los municipios de Piedecuesta, San Gil, Bucaramanga y Lebrija donde la mayoría son mujeres y jóvenes campesinos, quienes desarrollarán actividades que contribuyan y garanticen: i) Fortalecimiento de capacidades y habilidades para consolidar un buen vivir desde la agroecología, una mayor apropiación del territorio y el desarrollo de proyectos sostenibles que les permitan tener medios de vida; ii) Empoderamiento económico de las mujeres por medio de la agroecología para disminuir inequidad y aumentar su participación en la toma de decisiones al interior de las familias y en las comunidades; iii) Fortalecimiento de capacidades y habilidades de líderes y lideresas que mejoren gobernanza e incidencia; iv) Participación en las plataformas ciudadanas para la defensa del agua, los territorios y el Páramo Santurbán; v) Consolidación de redes, alianzas e intercambios para visibilizar y promover el proceso agroecológico como estrategia de buen vivir. It intentionally takes a step back from aiming directly to impact fiscal policy due to the progressively adverse context that faces Guatemala, which makes almost impossible to influence decision makers at the State level. Specifically, the change (Outcome) that this project pursues is generating new and/or strengthening existing channels of communication between civil society and the State. The project rationalizes that if these institutional channels are not used then these disappear, accelerating the reduction of the civil society space.   In the last project cycle, ICEFI aimed to influence fiscal policy in Guatemala towards the promotion and defense of human rights. It made progress in this regard, but due to a radical change in context in the middle of the project, it also incorporated a "damage control" approach. It adapted their strategies and mobilized their network of CSOs to act coordinatively to stop tax reforms regressive to human rights promoted by the State.   This project builds up from the lessons learned in the last project. It explicitly recognizes that this project takes place in a context where in the past two years, independent public investigators and judges are being criminalized, at least 25 of them are in exile, one, a high-level judge specialized in corruption was sentenced to four years in prison. Civil society critical to power is also threatened: the director of a investigative journalist outlet is facing a trial after 9 months of preventive prison, his case was suspiciously elaborated in less than 72 hours, also indigenous communities are being forcibly displaced from their ancestral land and livelihoods by oil palm and mining corporations. Locals leaders and communities members will train on conflict resolution and prevention mechanism.  In order to strength the resilience of communities affected by ongoing crisis,PVCA session will be conducted, and CAPs will be support in order to reduce the risks and chocs faced by communities.  Finally this project will contribute as much possible to reduce the effect of climate change by training communities and locals leaders on climate change effect but also by supporting some actions at small scale to reduce the climate change effects. As people The growing demand for for energy for cooking, warming  and other human economic activities have contributed to increased soil erosion and land degradation which adversely affect soil fertility. Women in Sierra Leone are characterized as caregivers to some extent breadwinners in case of the absent of the husband in the home. A bulk of these rural women depends on the forest for their livelihood and other economic benefits. Building on achievements and based on expertise, we will continue to work in the thematic areas of governance and human rights, gender equality and social and economic inclusion, and peacebuilding and conflict prevention, and will identify entry points for an increased focus on climate action. We will take a holistic approach to addressing the root causes of inequalities at the community and country level, in line with triple nexus principles. In Burundi regressive cultural and religious norms and practices favour the dominance of men over women and perpetuate acceptance of high levels of physical and economic exploitation of women and other legally recognised social groups such as Batwa, returnees, disable people, and albinos. Rapid population growth linked to weak sexual and reproductive health knowledge and rights further contributes to unequal power dynamics and limits the ability of women and girls to participate fully in the public sphere. Some progress has been made with the introduction of policies (such as the National Gender Policy 2021-2025), but implementation is slow, budget is inadequate, and mechanisms for policy implementation, when they exist, are weak. Such events have been estimated to result in a loss of 517% GDP per event. Climate change projections suggest that: a reduction in precipitation is expected for May (end of rainy season) and October (beginning of rainy season), a slight increase in days with ‘heavy’ rain by 2100, an increase of drought is expected in the northern part of the country that will cause a decrease in water levels in the northern lakes, floods are expected to increase in frequency and magnitude in the low-lying areas (e.g. Imbo floodplain), models project an increase in the number of ‘hot’ days per year for 2046-2065 and 2081-2100 under the low and high emissions scenarios, droughts are expected to become more intense and more frequent, occurring between 40 and 60% of the time .These projections imply that the long dry season is not only being prolonged because of climate change but also receives less rainfall and faces the most significant temperature increase resulting in acute problems for food security and water availability. In addition to losses in agricultural production resulting from the short rainy season and harnessing of wetlands during the long dry season, pastoral vegetation, the quality and quantity of food, the duration of the season of vegetable growth, the animal productivity and water quality are also likely to be affected as climate change progresses. This project will support highly vulnerable rural communities to increase their resilience to climate change, through targeted community and local adaptation activities in agriculture and forest protection. The project will also provide access to climate information and early warning systems at the local level. Key activities include establishing local disaster risk reduction committees, capacity building for making improved cookstoves to reduce the firewood used in the households and restore 5-hectare planting trees to reduce soil erosion.
